PYRGOS NEIGHBORHOOD

This complex of detached residences on the foothills of Pyrgos, jovially converses with the settlement. Bold and fractal, it keeps the scale and visual diversity of traditional buildings, while at the same time covers the multiple needs of the tenants. Seeking personal character, familiarity, but also the functionality of a permanent residence, it forms a neighbourhood. The entrance through the canopied walkway leads to a secret garden, a spot that encourages communication, should the tenants choose to. Socializing is also encouraged by a stroll in the internal walkway. There, the view opens out to a panorama of the Caldera and the neighbouring islands.

IT'S ALL ABOUT

DIVERSITY

The residences converse with Fira just across, doused in sunlight during the day, stunning at night. Rich greenery separates each residence from its neighbouring ones, opening the view toward the Caldera. The windows attentively focus in selected points of the horizon, maximizing the tenants’ visual pleasure.

The attunement of our architecture with the given landscape (the actual material environment and its climate) is bioclimatic, as it limits any arbitrariness of choice and reduces environmental damage and energy burden. The production act of the architecture, as we have proposed it, leads concurrently to the reinforcement of diversity and not of conformity.

TRADITION

& DESIGN

The complex is characterized but the solid, dense aesthetic, values both symbolic and sensorial that reminisce of the Santorini Island and sea complex. At the same time and effortlessly, it intertwines with whatever remains of the local idiom, with familiar shapes of the region’s tradition. The small scale, the deployment of shapes with the protrusion of segments of the façade, the curved terraces are a constant reference to the characteristics of the old residences of Pyrgos. The shapes outwardly express the relevant functions, whereas the multiple view openings, the dormers for natural climate conditioning, the courtyards, satisfy the demands dictated by its eco-conscience. Thick walls and planted terraces contribute to the achievement of thermal comfort. This new “neighbourhood” of Pyrgos encloses at the same time tradition, functionality and future direction, setting the pace for the era.
